  • Currency in Turkey | Koda Sail

WHAT CURRENCY IS USED IN TURKEY? The currency used in Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TL) The Turkish Lira , along with the related currencies of Europe and the Middle East, has its roots in the ancient Roman unit of weight known as the Libra which referred to the Troy pound of silver. The Roman libra adoption of the currency spread it throughout Europe and the Near East, where it continued to be used into medieval times. The Turkish Lira, the French Livre, the Italian Lira, and the British Pound are the modern descendants of the ancient currency. The 'Pound' is a translated version of the Roman libra. Notice that the word 'Pound' as a unit of weight is still abbreviated as 'lb'. Mind blown! Can you use other currencies in Turkey other than the Lira? The short answer is yes, but officially no. Depending on the vendor, y ou may be able to pay in Euros or USD for certain items such as accommodation, transport and also in some restaurants. It is not a requirement for a business to have to accept any currency other than the Turkish Lira, so make sure you check beforehand that it's OK for them. Generally they wont provide change in another currency, so best you have small notes to make it an easy transaction. Converting your local money into Lira is a lot more favourable on the exchange if doing in Turkey rather than in your home country. Download the XE.com app for up to date rates so you can confidently make your comparisons at the exchange booth. If you can get close to the official rate, then you know you've done well! If you are not happy with the exchange, you can always exchange in a bank branch, or better still just leave the cash at home and retrieve it directly out of the ATM as many banks these days give very fair exchanges. It would be worth checking in with your local bank beforehand so you know of any hidden fees. Major port towns in Turkey will have ATMs that are linked to international banking networks, however some of the smaller towns may not even have ATM facilities at all so always prepare a few days ahead. These days credit cards showing the Visa or MasterCard symbol are recognised and accepted in most tourist areas, however if travelling off the beaten track, it wouldn't hurt to go old school and have some cash on hand. Please note that while onboard with us, any extra expenses such as excursions, bar tabs and tips etc will need to be paid in cash and should ideally be in Turkish Lira or Euro. Your helpful Koda Sail rep will be able to point you in the right direction of where the closest ATM's are along the way so you're not always carrying a lot of cash around for no reason. Check xe.com to see how the Lira fares against your home currency. BUDGETING FOR YOUR TOUR Depending on your taste, a sailing tour in Europe can be cheap once you are there and not too much money needs to be spent during the week if you didn’t want to. Eating Out: Outside of the many included meals throughout the week, there are opportunities to eat out on the land. The restaurants we recommend are in the price range of €7-30 per meal. Going Out: If you decide to join the group on our nights out, our Koda Sail reps organise free entries to clubs and nightly drink specials, helping you to save money to be spent elsewhere. There is also a bar on board the boat that will put on some Happy Hours throughout the week with different specials, allowing you to enjoy a cheaper drink if you wish. A bar tab is run on the boat for the week allowing you to pay in cash at the end. It is visible all week and you can keep track as you go. As a rough guide for your bar tab on board, €100-150 Euro for the week would get you a beer/wine at lunch and dinner, some drinks in the afternoon on the sun deck and then pre-drinks before heading out, for the 7 days while on the boat. Excursions: If you choose to do any extra excursions we have on offer, you will need to budget for these. To do everything, it generally is around €130-180 per person. These prices are just a guide as excursions change from season to season. Tipping: Tipping is not compulsory and it’s entirely up to you if you decide to give extra to your Koda Sail crew. It’s definitely not expected, but is very much appreciated. You will see the Koda Sail team always goes above and beyond to ensure you have the best week of your life on our tours. It’s something we pride ourselves on. You will have the opportunity to show your gratitude to your crew at the end of the tour. The amount you tip is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline we recommend; €10 per WEEK, per crew member on board. €5 per DAY for your Koda Sail tour manager

  • Travel Guide Turkey | Koda Sail Turkey

TURKEY travel guide Where East meets West, Turkey shows you why it's best! To much surprise due to it's long history, Turkey is quite a modern country with a captivating blend of antiquity and contemporary, juxtaposing the West and the East. Life in Turkey is a rich variety of cultures and traditions, some dating back centuries. Anyone visiting Turkey will find a great deal that is exotic, and much that is reassuringly familiar. The surprising blend of East and West makes up the Turkish lifestyle. You will find the coastline of Turkey to be some of the most beautiful in the world. It is along these long shores where there are so many great beaches to choose from, all with the scenery of the Aegean, Mediterranean, or Black Sea Coast. Each has something to offer and are a unique blend of history, natural wonder and culinary variety. Located just outside of the typical tourist trail in Western Europe, it has been able to maintain a great deal of it’s charm as an off the beaten path destination, especially in the south. It is a lot cheaper than most touristy European destinations, yet it’s one that offers amazing experiences and exceeds all it's expectations from the moment you arrive. It’s very easy to find yourself saying ‘this is the life’ when the warm Mediterranean summer climate kicks in, and the sun is shining day in and day out! The best time to sail the Turkish coastline is June through to September as the weather is just bliss! These are just some of the draws that are making a Turkey sailing experience, such an increasingly popular vacation. Sailing in Turkey is on the bucket-list of every traveller passing through Europe. Make sure it's on yours! Want to know more about Turkey? Check out our FAQ's page for all those little extra bits you need to know. From New York, a non-stop flight is 9h 45m and from London, it is just 3h 50m. THE CAPITAL To the confusion of some, Although the largest city, Istanbul is NOT the capital, it is in fact Ankara. Nestled in the heart of Turkey it is a good waypoint when going to tourist destinations like Cappadocia. LANGUAGE The official language of Turkey is Turkish. Amongst the younger population and the tourist areas, English is widely spoken but it would be best to learn some basic Turkish phrases before your trip. CURRENCY Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (YTL). US dollars are also unofficially accepted throughout the country, especially in the tourist areas. ATMs are widely available but it's advisable to have some cash with you, especially for the markets! VISAS Australian, Canadian, UK and US citizens must purchase an e-Visa ahead of departure for stays of up to 60 or 90 days, depending on the country. Make sure you check visa requirements before you travel. VACCINATIONS Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are advised, but not compulsory. Consult your doctor 4 to 6 weeks before you depart. COVID Requirements: Unvaccinated visitors must have a printed or electronic negative COVID-19 test result. FETHIYE TURKEY The largest seaside town along the Turquoise Coast, Fethiye is home to close to 200,000 people. During the Summer months, the marina is bustling with holiday-makers here to soak up the unlimited sunshine. The average temp over the Summer is a perfect 32c / 90f! Just 2 miles south of the marina is the famous Blue Lagoon (pictured). The view from the top is amazing and you have the opportunity to see it from above on a tandem paraglide. Voted as one of the worlds top places to paraglide, you'll no doubt agree as you soar like an eagle above this beautiful coastline. St Nicks TURKEY St Nicholas island (also known as Gemiler Island) is said to be home to the original tomb of St Nicholas. Yes, that St Nick (Ho Ho Ho!). This island is visited by many, not only because of it's rich Byzantine history, but also because this island has one of the most beautiful sunset spots in the world. Take a mini hike up to the top of St Nicholas Island after an afternoon of swimming in the bay for the most magical sunset you will ever see! KAS TURKEY The lively harbour town of Kaş has a lot of charm to it with it's old cobbled streets and colorful local markets, full of intricate jewellery. Within a short walking distance is the still-visible ruins site of ancient Antiphellos, including an amphitheatre. The lively summer night life in Kaş is one not to miss. Start the night off slow with a shisha and some rooftop cocktails befre dancing the night away. It's quite common to see the streets full of life after midnight as a stroll back to the boat will definitely swing by the late night kebab shop! #Goodtimes KEKOVA TURKEY A small Turkish island famous for its Sunken City. An ancient town which was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century is preserved under the seas surface and is now a UNESCO Heritage site. The best way to see the sunken city is by kayak. Hover over it and easily see the ruins below through the crystal blue water. Across the bay is the impressive Simena Castle, with centuries of history and a glimpse into the country’s Ottoman past. Some of the best ice cream on the Mediterranean can be found here. Enough said! ADD ONS There's more to see in Turkey, so why not add on some more adventure before or after your tour with a visit to these destinations CAPPADOCIA TURKEY Although storybook visions of colourful hot air balloons are what come to mind when you name drop Cappadocia, there’s more to it than Instagram suggests. Temples cut into rocks and an underground city is more of what’s on offer, whilst its valleys host hiking trails that are as scenic as the views from above. Add it onto your Sailing tour or see it on our ANZAC Footsteps tour PAMUKKALE TURKEY Though Cappadocia has reached an almost impossible level of popularity, Turkey boasts other sights that are equally picturesque. Take Pamukkale, for example. Its travertine terraces of hot springs have drawn weary, pamper-seeking travellers through the ages. Dip your feet in the Pamukkale Antique Pool in the nearby Hierapolis. Add it onto your Sailing tour or see it on our ANZAC Footsteps tour EPHESUS TURKEY Three kilometres from the town of Selçuk is the ancient city of Ephesus. It was once one of the most important Greek cities in Asia Minor, and its ruins are now famous world over. There’s much to see here but the most beautiful remnants might just be the Temple of Hadrian, Library of Celsus, Temple of Artemis and the amphitheatre. While you’re there, stop by the House of the Virgin Mary. See it on our ANZAC Footsteps tour GALLIPOLI TURKEY The Gallipoli Peninsula has played its part in history and has endured several wars including World War I, whose haunting battlefields now host a number of war memorials. Learn about the ill-fated Gallipoli events by seeing the 3D exhibits at the Çanakkale Epic Presentation Centre in the village of Kabatepe as well as visiting the Lone Pine Cemetery and ANZAC Cove landing site. See it on our ANZAC Footsteps tour MORE INFO Read our TOP 10 Blogs on why Turkey is where YOU HAVE TO BE this Summer! The Turkish Coastline Top 10 Special Turkish Desserts Why you HAVE to see Cappadocia! • Meet the crew | Koda Sail Team

Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life... It's the old saying that not many people get to live by, but for us here at Koda Sail it's pretty much our life motto! We love what we do so much that sometimes it's easy to forget it is actually a job. And we think that's the way it should be. Find something you're passionate about and go for it! Time to meet our team...they've never worked a day in their lives! MEET CHRIS What's your story? From what started out as a short 2 month trip back in 2010, has now turned into a lifestyle for me. I've been traveling on and off in between other jobs since 2001, but now have decided that this is it, this is what I was born to do! My travels have taken me to 60+ countries so far (there's still more on my list!), but whenever someone asks me where my favourite place in the world is, my response is ALWAYS Croatia...with Turkey and the Maldives a close second now ;) It's such an amazing country, I'm totally in love with it! Cities like Dubrovnik and Split are enriched in so much history, they still give me goosebumps. The people here are so friendly, helpful and very entertaining. I've made many local friends here over the years and can't wait to get back every Summer to catch up. Guide of the Year Award: In 2014 after a few years of experience under my belt, I placed 5th in the world in Tour Radar's 'Guide of the Year' awards, which was a nice reward for an already awesome job. Being rated so highly from my past passengers is a nice recognition. It's a great feeling to know you've had an influence on helping people enjoy their vacation. MEET LUCAS What's your story? After spending the better part of a decade, living, working and travelling aboard, I have been fortunate enough to explore over 100 different countries. From big cities to beachside resorts, to jungles and the snowfields, I have shared countless life changing experience with so many amazing people from all walks of life. Through working with Koda Sail, I have been able to recreate the moments over and over again for everyone else who join us on our trips! Known to my friends as 'Jack of all, but master of none,' I am an avid photographer, yoga teacher and adventurer, always looking to explore a new destination. I like to get off the beaten track when I'm not 'working', and recently spent a few months in the Middle East. I travelled through Iran, Lebanon, Oman, Jordan, Israel & Palestine which was amazing and like nowhere else on earth. When I am not in Croatia or on the road exploring somewhere new, you can find me in the Maldives running the Koda Sail Island Hopping Tours , or in Bali and Africa with Indy Escapes. As you can see, I don't like to sit still! Looking forward to meeting you all this Summer! MEET Çağdaş What's your story? Çağdaş (pronounced Shaggy to make it easier for everyone), is a proud Turk who has worked in the tourism industry forever! He brings years of experience to Koda Sail and runs our Turquoise Delights & Lycian Dreams tour in southern Turkey. A week on board with Shaggy and you'll never want to leave. One of the friendliest sailors on the seas, he's well known everywhere and will have the red carpet rolled out for you! We are more than happy to have Shaggy on our ever growing Koda Sail team as he represents everything we are about with his experience, knowledge, passion and most of all, a great sense of humour! Get on board with him this Summer on our Turquoise Delights & Lycian Dreams tours. MEET SOPHIE What's your story? Sophie has been practicing yoga since 2014, starting her Yoga journey whilst travelling through Australia. She quickly realised how much it improved her well-being, fitness and flexibility! On returning back home to the UK in 2019, Sophie decided to dive in to her teacher training and completed her 200hr Vinyasa flow teacher training at Frog Lotus International at the beautiful Suryalila in Southern Spain. Since then, Sophie has been teaching regular yoga classes in various different spaces and studios. She now joins the Koda Sail team as we embark on adding more well-being to our tours. On these tours with Sophie, she will help you improve strength, balance and flexibility. Adding regular yoga practice to your routine can help reduce levels of stress, increase your mental and physical energy and helps support any other physical movement or activities. Combine this with the beautiful surroundings of the Turquoise coastline, delicious foods and great company, and no doubt your batteries will be fully charged! Get on board with Sophie this Summer on our special Yoga Edition of the Turquoise Delights tour. Sophe MEET BEN What's your story? Being from London, travel has always been on my doorstep. From school trips, to family getaways to then moving abroad for work, travel has always been a part of my life. I've been lucky enough to find a nice place for me within the tourism industry and have been guiding all over Europe since 2008 with large stints in Budapest and Croatia, places I consider my home away from home. My favorite thing about being in Croatia is getting to show my guests this hidden treasure and seeing their reactions for the first time. I remember the first time I walked through the big gates in Dubrovnik and just love being able to walk through them now with my guests. I'm a huge Game of Thrones fan, so that's always an added bonus for getting to Dubrovnik :) When I'm not 'working' in Croatia I am based in London and enjoy working on my side project www.everthoughtoftrying.com With all my experience over the years travelling through Europe and finding the best experiences out there such as cooking schools in Italy, language courses in Spain and my personal favorite of cycling through the French countryside, I now get the chance to offer it through my website. As you can see, travel is my life :) MEET BRUNO What's your story? Bruno, along with his 5 brothers have grown up on the sea. Coming from the small seaside port town of Krilo, just south of Split, there is a long history of sailing and an expectation to carry on the family tradition. Bruno's father was a Captain which meant the brothers spent most of their childhood at sea helping their father. This led to them all eventually working on the Adriatic, on different boats all Summer long. The chance to work together again started with Koda Sail, and they jumped at the opportunity. Koda Sail has brought all 6 brothers together to sail all Summer long together as a family and create new memories with our Koda Sail passengers. They love being able to work together again and invite you to be part of their family this Summer as we sail the Dalmatian coast. WORK WITH US As you can tell by now, working with Koda Sail is pretty awesome. Spending your Summers cruising the Mediterranean and showing off the magical coasts to all your passengers has got to be up there with one of the best jobs in the world. At Koda Sail we aim to deliver the highest standard sailing holidays possible, with passionate staff that are super organised, have a big smile, a fun loving personality and a drive to deliver an entertaining and memorable vacation to all our passengers. If you share the same enthusiasm and think you have what it takes to be a passionate guide with us at Koda Sail, then we'd love to hear from you! To apply please submit your application on our jobs page HERE

Spend the afternoon by the pool or take a leisurely walk around the iconic Baobabs, all under the guidance of your tour leader. As the day winds down, enjoy a delightful dinner, capping off a day filled with exploration and relaxation. DAY 5: Thursday MAKGADIKGADI SALT PANS This morning with the help of a local guide, we'll take a tour of a nearby village, meeting the people and getting to know their culture, language and customs. After lunch we start our adventure to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, one of the world's largest. Along the way we make a stop to spot a Meerkat colony, before getting our Quad-bikes to ride into the deep of the Pan for our overnight camp out under the stars. No doubt, this will be one of the highlights of the trip you'll talk about forever. One not to be missed! DAY 6: Friday MAUN - BOTSWANA After breakfast, we start making our way towards Botswana’s Okavango Delta wilderness with a stop in the village of Maun. Nestled along the Thamalakane River's shores, Island Safari Lodge emerges as a refreshing and inviting sanctuary in the heart of Maun. Enveloped by a canopy of towering trees, occasional glimpses of crocodiles and hippos (seasonal) add to its allure. Set within a serene bush environment, the lodge provides an ideal haven to rejuvenate before embarking on your safari adventures. This afternoon elevate your perspective with an open-sided Helicopter ride, and capture unbeatable wetland vistas from lofty heights. Whether you're suspended meters above waterways or gliding over the plains in search of wildlife, seize the opportunity to capture truly astonishing aerial snapshots. One for the bucket-list! DAY 7: Saturday SAFARI DAY 1 - BOTSWANA With our senses already entranced by this exceptional natural terrain, our next destination is the Okavango Delta. Here, an awe-inspiring game drive awaits, setting the stage for our arrival at the exclusive Koda Safari Camp. At our camp set up especially for us, you'll be welcomed with our two-person dome tents, pre-set with stretchers, mattresses, and linen. And for dinner, envision a campfire feast, as we share stories beneath the sprawling canopy of a star-studded sky. It's time to disconnect from the world and get a taste of the real Africa. DAY 8: Sunday SAFARI DAY 2 - BOTSWANA Immersed in the heart of Africa's iconic wildlife filming paradise, we find ourselves amidst a vast wetland teeming with Africa's most remarkable species. Our journey begins with an early morning game drive in the Okavango, a haven for elephants, hippos, and with luck, even predators. After returning to camp for a lunch and a siesta, it's time for our Mokoro boat excursion along the delta's enchanting waterways. As the afternoon sun dips, another awe-inspiring game drive awaits, leading to a traditional campfire dinner. DAY 9 & 10: Monday & Tuesday SAFARI DAY 3 & 4 - BOTSWANA By now you will have become an expert in all things safari and be on the lookout spot the Big Five. We have 2 Game drives each day (morning and afternoon/evening) to try our luck at ticking them all off our bucket list. We'll also get the chance to do a night drive in search for nocturnal animals and experience what happens when we're all asleep. A very different experience that'll keep you on the edge of your seat! DAY 11: Wednesday MAUN - BOTSWANA Our final day ends with one last Game Drive on the way back to Maun. We say our final goodbyes to our Koda crew and your new Koda Fam, before a final transfer to Maun airport to send you off from this African paradise. So, you're still reading this?
